Mary "Maxine" Smith
Early Sunday morning, August 16, 2015, Maxine passed away peacefully at home under the loving care of her daughters, Marilyn and Susan and granddaughter, Mary . She was 94 and had a short battle with cancer.
Maxine was born September 28, 1920 in Burley, Idaho to George Lester "Les" and Joan Smith Nelson who owned Nelson's Cafe and Pilots Club. In 1932 she moved to Eugene, Ore. with her mother and her sister, Dorothy Jay (deceased). There she would attend high school and business college. It was while playing tennis that she met Clarence McCoy and would later marry him. They had two children, Raymond and Sharon (deceased) and lived around the Portland, Ore. area. That marriage ended in divorce and Maxine moved to Medford in 1948.
Here she worked for an attorney and as a bookkeeper. Later she met Charles Smith on a double date and they were married July 3, 1951. They enjoyed square dancing, hunting, fishing, camping, and going on cruises together.
Maxine was a lifelong faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in a variety of callings including Relief Society President and with the Mutual (Youth) organization. She and Charles were the first managers of the pear farm owned by the church from 1977-1981. She also volunteered as a bookkeeper at the Bishop's Storehouse for 32 years.
In addition to serving family and others, Maxine learned how to do an amazing number of practical things. These included: cultivating a large garden, canning and drying fruits and vegetables, making homemade candy, baking, re-upholstering, lake and deep sea fishing, decorating wedding cakes, sewing tailored dresses and men's suits.
Maxine lived very much in the present and thoroughly enjoyed doing things with children and grandchildren, especially dice and board games.
Maxine is survived by a step-brother, Jack Staley; son, Ray (Donna) Smith; daughters, Marilyn (Jody) Tobiasson, Susan (Leon) Pearson; 24 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, and daughter.
