Joseph Phillip Fazio July 1, 1937 - October 2, 2021

Joe Fazio lived a life of such fullness that of necessity more will be left out than can be included in this obituary.
Joe was born in Chicago, Illinois 1937 and moved to California, age 9 years, with his parents and younger sister, Judy. It seems he was a born leader early on as in 1955 he was both Student Body President and Senior Class President at Torrance High School in Torrance, California. This is also where he met the love of his life his future wife, Anne Bayliss. They married in 1956 at ages 18 and 19 respectively and defied the odds of teen marriages as they were together happily for 65 years and Anne says, “he made me laugh every single day”. Only his death has parted them.
At this young age, with three small children (Karen, Sharon, Joseph Jr.) and a fourth arriving later (Anthony) Joe pursued and achieved his Doctorate of Education degree. He loved teaching and teachers but most of all he loved children. He touched the lives of many young people including his own 4 children, plus 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
He mentored students and teachers alike, brought innovative ways of teaching to the classroom and shared his love of learning generously. He was, at various times and in various cities a teacher, principal and ultimately Superintendent of Schools for both Saugus and Castaic in California.
All the while he was fully involved as educator, father and husband he also enjoyed the sporting life. Joe played golf, skied and instructed in to his 60’s, windsurfed in to his 70’s and bought his last horse in his 80’s.
Joe was a lifelong animal lover of all animals but his Whippets, which he and Anne entered into many competitions, may have had a slight edge, possibly because they bore an uncanny resemblance to Joe himself….always lean, graceful and loving!
His many contributions to any community he belonged to, whether California or later, Oregon, are simply too numerous to list, suffice to say “NO” was not in his vocabulary when there was any request for his help. Maybe that is where his love affair with the microphone started…he loved that microphone and, very fortunately, the microphone loved him right back! Many a meeting, event or family gathering was enlivened with his wit and charm as a speaker.
Joseph P. Fazio was a rare and wonderful man, a combination of intelligence, strength, kindness, humor and integrity.
He leaves a great legacy to follow and a very empty space where he once was.
