Jerry Lee Shults passed away May 18, 2014 with his loved ones by his side at Rogue Regional Medical Center. Jerry was born May 15, 1942 in Medford, Ore. He graduated from Medford Senior High and was a player on the state basketball championship team in 1960. He was a standout basketball player for SOC and received his teaching degree. In 1964 he married Joan E. Callaghan and moved to Lakeview, Ore.
He was a teacher and boys basketball coach. He took an almost non-existant program and turned it into a team that made regular appearances at the state championships. In 1983 his wife and two daughters, Lisa Pecktol and K.C. Sam, moved to Eagle Point, Ore. where he was a well-respected counselor, coach, and role model to many
He loved camping, rafting, golf, spending time outside, and most importantly, spending time with his family. He loved his grandkids, Josh and Alex Pecktol and Jessie Pettegrew-Sam, more than anything.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Audrey Berry. He is survived by his wife, Joan Shults; daughters, Lisa Pecktol (Bob Dusenberry) and K.C. (Tim) Sam, both of Eagle Point, Ore.; three grandchildren; and one soon to be great-grandson.
A viewing will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Memory Gardens Mortuary and a service at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2014 at Shepherd of the Valley in Central Point, Ore. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Athletic department at Lakeview, Eagle Point, or North Medford High Schools, or to the American Cancer Society.
