Gilbert "Dan" Daniken
Gilbert "Dan" Daniken of Central Point, Ore. passed away on January 18, 2014 at the age of 89. He was born the third of four sons on January 12, 1925 to Emma and John Daniken in Greenville, Ill. The four boys enjoyed farm life in rural Illinois. Dan graduated from Greenville High School. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army in the Pacific from 1944 to 1946. "Big Bucks" in the Southern Oregon timber industry lured him to the Rogue Valley in 1946. He continued working in and around the woods and eventually retired from Boise Cascade after 31 years as the Log Yard Superintendent.
He met nurse Betty Robinson at Medford's Sacred Heart Hospital after a motorcycle accident in 1948. They soon married and had two children, Donald and Deborah, and made their home in Medford for 31 years until her death in 1981.
In 1983 he married Helen Aarseth and moved to Central Point. As older newlyweds, Dan and Helen loved traveling, gardening, working outdoors and playing social games with friends and family. They were active Lifetime Members of the Little Butte Mountain Men, spending countless hours maintaining the wilderness shooting range to Dan and Helen's park-like standards. He was an incredible shot and has accumulated a wall full of marksmanship trophies. Dan was a pilot for over 50 years and he always made a point to drive by the Medford airport to "just check it out".
Dan and Helen were an inseparable couple who enjoyed every day together, finding the humor in life.
Dan is survived by: his wife of almost 31 years, Helen, his brother Maurice of Greenville, Ill., his daughter Deborah Lusk of Eagle Point, two step-sons, Lynn Aarseth of Jefferson, Ore. and Tom Aarseth of Banks, Ore., three step-daughters, Beverly Fety of Rogue River, Ore., Susan Aarseth of Mulino, Ore. and Annamarie Aarseth of Central Point, Ore., ten grandchildren, Doug Daniken, David Trautman (Lindsey), Lindsey Young (Garrett), Andy Aarseth (Heather), Aaron Aarseth, Damian Shafer, Donald Aarseth, Lauren Fety, Stuart Fety, Allegra Fety and five great grandchildren Danyele Daniken, Tanner Daniken, Danielle Aarseth, Cameron Aarseth and Blaine Trautman.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty, parents John and Emma Daniken, brothers Robert Daniken and Herbert Daniken, and son Donald Daniken.
